Plot
Five years since the events of the last film and Godzilla has been in hiding ever since. Emma, a ‘pro Titan’ Dr working at Monarch whose son died in the 2014 attack, joins an eco-terrorist Alan Jonah – and begins unleashing the Titans on the earth in order to ‘restore balance’. Together they wake up the indestructible King Ghidora – which swiftly kills Godzilla who has come back to assist.
Her former colleagues who were present at the 2014 attacks Dr’s Serizawa and Graham enlist Emma’s ex husband in order to help stop her, and also bring Godzilla back to life.
Direction
New director to the franchise Michael Dougherty is too reliant on CGI, and at often times almost ‘cartoon’ style action, especially when it comes to King Ghidora.
Some of the characters have almost superhuman strength (surviving explosions throwing them into walls) and more plot armour than John McClane.
Cast/Characters
Kyle Chandler is ‘okay’ as the main protagonist Mark – but he’s easily forgettable.
Vera Farmiga as Emma is solid, but her ‘redemption’ arc near the end feels not warranted, considering what she did throughout the film prior.
Charles Dance feels wasted as Alan Jonah.
Millie Bobbie Brown as Emma and Mark’s daughter Maddison is probably my MVP – and does a great job.
Returning cast members from 2014 film are David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins.
Screenplay/Setting/Themes
With some truly groan inducing dialogue, and Farmiga as perhaps the worst on screen mother in most of film history (she essentially causes every human death in the film).
There are a couple of deaths on screen in which we are given ‘forced emotion’ that did not work.
I also realise that ‘less is more’ but at times I wondered if they had forgotten Godzilla in this Godzilla movie.
Overall
Pretty bad in almost every way. Unmemorable hero, not the best graphics or action. Silly plot armour for the heroes – and wait did Alan Johah get away???
