Nathan Caine is a overly careful Assistant Bank Manager, who has CIPA(Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis) – so every aspect of his life is careful.
He meets new teller, Sherry who is smitten by him, and they go on a date – and the following day the bank is robbed, and sherry is kidnapped by the trio of robbers.
with nothing to lose, he goes after her, and must face off against the three robbers.
Cast/Characters
Jack Quaid is fun as Nathan, or Nate. His ability to “not” react to the many scenes where his character is supposed to be hurt or in pain is hilarious. He truly has shown lately that he has leading man worth.
Ray Nicholson plays the main antagonist Simon, who “is known” to Sherry (more on that in a moment). He plays the over the top bad guy very well, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of his work.
Fun facts, Quaid is the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, and Nicholson is the son of Jack.
Other cast members include; Amber Midthunder as Sherry, Jacob Batolon as Nate’s one friend Roscoe, Betty Gabriel and Matt Walsh as cops Mincy and Coltrane, Conrad Kemp and Evan Hengst as the last two robbers Andre and Ben.
They both have proven themselves with their own talent. While I feel this more from Quaid as he has done more that I know of (Sceam 20, and The Boys).
Breakdown
You’re not going into a movie where a guy can’t feel pain, who goes after a bunch of bad guys who have kidnapped his girlfriend and then “goes Rambo” on them and think you’re going to watch the next “top 10 on IMDB”…
However it is a fun watch. The way Nate’s CIPA is handled from the beginning (putting safety precautions on his everyday life, is clever – and actually does give a lot of information about it.
It is obviously ‘hollywoodised’ to the point of ridiculous. Some of the violence, is quite violent and graphic (one moment he is pretty much tortured, but his lack of feeling the pain is shown as comical. Then there is the final fight between Nate and Sherry which ends… well you just have to watch it to understand.
The ‘love story’ between Nate and Sherry is both fast tracked (they only have had one date?) and long winded (the robbery scene happens at the half hour mark. So the pacing is an issue. These both could have been fixed, with making the couple have a more extended relationship, and bringing the robbery up a little.
I didn’t hate the Sherry reveal, but I think that *** spoiler *** Simon being her brother was the wrong choice. It should have been her boyfriend, because it lacked realism (in a very unrealistic film) that someone would chose the guy she’s gone on one date with over her brother.
It also has surprisingly good amount of heart, with the beginning of the relationship between Nate and Sherry; her giving him pie, and that we’re all just looking for someone we can show ourselves to. Nate’s conversation with Mincy feels a little tacked on, but does what it needs to for her character.
Overall
Silly, over the top, but oh so enjoyable.
It is extremely violent, so if you are easy to offend or find things graphic, then this isn’t for you. If you’re immune to it, you should enjoy!
