Plot
In 2067, Earth is slowly becoming uninhabitable, with little vegetation able to be grown. Coop is a former NASA pilot, and now corn farmer after the government cut all funding to NASA.
When his daughter Murph believes there is a ghost in her room, the ghost sends them to a remote part of the country where they find that a group of ‘rebels’ have launched a private space program, in order to find alternate planets to send humanity to, so humanity can continue to survive.
Coop heads off with a team of others, to head out to where previous volunteers have travelled, but where time works differently – will Coop be able to make it back to Earth while his children are still young?
Direction
Technically and visually spectacular – there are so many moments of brilliant visual effects, in deep outer space, and true depictions of worm holes. Some notable memorable moments are the water planet (as well as the mile high tidal wave), the frozen cloud of Mann’s planet – and the docking scene following the explosion in space.
As per Nolan trademark – he utilises as much practical effects as he can.
Cast/Characters
Matthew Mc plays Coop – and is solid as a leading man. He has the strength at times for some physical moments, and then there are some truly heartbreaking moments – especially when the team return from Miller’s planet and he watches the videos of his children from the last 20 years.
Anne Hathaway plays Brand – one of the top scientists who work at NASA, and daughter of Michael Caine’s NASA director. I’ve always been a fan of Hathaway, and felt she did an amazing job at the strong willed fellow traveller to deep space.
Jessica Chastain plays the adult version of Murph, who first appears after the 23 year time jump following the voyage to Miller’s Planet. Casey Affleck plays the adult version of her older brother Tom (Timothée Chalamet plays the child version).
Matt Damon plays the surprise character of Dr Mann, who has an important arc in the second act.
John Lythgow is another stellar performer, who plays Coop’s father in law, left to watch over his kids while he is on his journey, and Ellen Burstyn playing a role later in the film.
Screenplay/Setting/Themes
The timeline, while linear in narrative – is set “at the time of the journey” – so in one part of the film, when Coop and Brand are on a planet for just an hour or so – 23 years pass on earth.
One of the main themes of the film is love, as Brand is searching for her lost love – who was on a previous mission to deep space. Coop’s love for his children, and his desire for them to have a chance at both a future for themselves, but also their own children.
Sacrifice is also a heavy theme as Coop and Brand sacrifice their time with their family for the fate of the world.
Some of the science dialogue is very technical, so it can get a little hard to follow if you’re not overly ‘technical’ minded.
Score/Soundtrack
Hanz Zimmer’s score is simply breathtaking from start to finish. How he did not get the Oscar win for this is simply criminal. This is by far the best work I’ve heard from him.
Overall
Near perfect sci-fi film, with flawless performances by all involved. With amazing effects, and action moments that will stay with you.
Zimmer’s score, and Nolan’s direction is simply brilliant.
4.5/5
