Very Bad Things (1998)

Written & Directed by Peter Berg

Jon Favreau, Cameron Diaz, Christian Slater, Leland Orser, Jeremy Piven, Daniel Stern, Jeanne Tripplehorn.

On the week of Kyle (Favreau) and Laura’s (Diaz) wedding, Kyle heads to Vegas with his friends Boyd (Slater), Moore (Orser), and brothers Michael (Piven) and Adam (Stern). On the night they are there, a tragic accident occurs and the men are responsible for two deaths. Hiding the bodies in the desert, they vow to keep what happened a secret. But can what happened in Vegas stay in Vegas?

Solid black comedy from Berg, with a pre ‘Happy’ Favreau in the lead role. He has a talented cast around him, who each feel on point as their characters. There didn’t really seem to be any let downs in the cast at all. The characters are all uniquely flawed in their own ways, such as ‘Bridezilla’ Diaz, the socially awkward Orser, and the over the top somewhat psychotic Slater.

There’s nothing awards worthy about the plot or screenplay, but no one is expecting it to be Shawshank worthy. There are some memorable quotes, primarily Adam’s hurricane analogy which is a bit touching.

There is a quirky score that matches the dark comedy moments, and a soundtrack to match the late 90’s era, and the Las Vegas setting.

This is a fun film if you are into black comedies.
